As the author and reformer of the musical-dramatic genre of opera and oratorio, he has made an indelible mark on the history of these genres. His oratorio San Giovanni Battista, which depicts the story of John the Baptist and Salome, is one of the most impressive works of its kind and its dramatic and melodic inventiveness continues to captivate centuries later.
